Hospital Bag Must Haves (Edited 7/20)

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

This post has been updated as of 7/20 with the items that I actually needed for the hospital! Extra details are bolded and italicized in parentheses next to certain bullet points!

I am nearly 37 weeks and have officially started to pack for the hospital! Since this is my first pregnancy, I don't know exactly what i'll need but I'm pretty sure I have a solid list of important items to bring! Also, I don't know how long I will be in the hospital but I am going to pack for a two day stay at the minimum. Once I give birth and know more, I will revise this post and tell you about the things we actually needed! Some links will be provided below!

If you are expecting or know someone who is expecting and is wondering what to pack in a hospital bag, I hope that this helps you and relieves some stress off of your plate!

Packing for Baby

I fit everything for my baby (along with a few extras) in my Freshly Picked Diaper Bag!

  • Newborn and 0-3 Month Onesies (Since you don't know how big baby will be!)

  • Socks

  • No Scratch Mittens

  • Swaddle Blankets (Our hospital provided a Halo Sleep Sack which Grayson LOVED! We ended up buying some for him to use at home!)

  • Pacifier and Pacifier Clip (If you plan on using one)

  • Coming Home Outfit

  • Announcement Outfit (For Photos)

  • Name Tag. (Our hospital provided us with a keepsake of Grayson's footprint on a piece of cardstock).

  • Most Important: Car Seat

Packing for Mom

  • Comfy Pajamas (Pack Button Down Pajamas like these if you plan on Breastfeeding)

  • Seamless Nursing Bra (If you plan on breastfeeding)

  • Nursing Pads (Even if you don't plan on breastfeeding, they are helpful anyway)

  • Nipple Cream

  • Coming Home Outfit

  • Night Light (for night feedings so you don't have to turn the bright lights on)

  • Toiletries (Face Wash, Lotion, Deodorant, Hairbrush, Hair Ties, Toothbrush and Toothpaste, Makeup, etc) (It was easy for me to do my makeup right in bed because there was a built-in mirror in the bedside table tray)

  • Technology (Cell Phone, Long Phone Charger, and Headphones)

  • Most Important: Insurance Card, Driver's License or ID, and Wallet

  • Must Have (In My Opinion): Bring your own Tylenol, Prenatal Vitamins, and Stool Softener since they will be prescribing them anyway BUT they will at a much higher cost per dose. (*Definitely bring these to save you money!*)

Packing for Dad

  • Outfits (for two or more days)

  • Pajamas

  • Socks and Underwear

  • Toiletries (Toothbrush and Toothpaste, Deodorant, etc)

  • Pillow and Blanket (We did not pack these ourselves. Keanu said the hospital blankets and pillows were very uncomfortable and that the blanket was lightweight so he was cold!)

  • Technology (Cell Phone, Phone Charger, Laptop, Headphones, etc) (Keanu also wishes that he would of brought his PS4 since there was a lot of downtime without any vistitors allowed!)

  • Snacks and Drinks (for him AND mom) (There is a small mini fridge in the room)

As always, thank you for reading! I hope that this list helps all you future mama's out there!

Love, Olivia
